Children’s Cancer Foundation Supports The Inn’s Education Program
At their 33rd Annual Gala held Saturday, November 4th, the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF) generously awarded The Children’s Inn two grants totaling $33,000 to support the seriously-ill residents who stay at The Inn while they participate in NIH clinical trials.
CCF funds will help support The Inn’s Education and Instructional Support Program. Keeping up with schoolwork is a true challenge for children suffering from cancer or other life-threatening diseases. Repeated medical treatments result in frequent and extended school absences, significantly disrupting their education. CCF funding for the program will help ensure school-age residents at The Inn receive one-on-one tutoring and individualized assistance with their home school’s curriculum. Funding also supports drop-in and hands-on educational sessions and field trips. Because so many Inn residents travel to The Inn with family members, this program supports siblings and caregivers too.
CCF will also fund The Inn’s Respite Weekend through its Shirley’s Kids Fund. This fund was created by CCF to honor its founder, the late Shirley Howard, and is designated to support meaningful programs for pediatric patients in active treatment. During Respite Weekend, Inn children and families enjoy an all-expenses-paid weekend “away” at a local hotel, and participate in a mix of fun and unique adventures. This past August, thanks to CCF, Inn families stayed at Hotel Indigo in Alexandria, VA enjoying quality time together as they explored the many sites of Old Town Alexandria. A trip to Dulles Golf Center and Sports Park gave kids and parents alike the chance to golf, play basketball, pan for gemstones and practice their batting swings, and everyone enjoyed the delicious snacks and meals provided throughout the weekend.
CCF has partnered with The Inn since 1990, when CCF provided significant start-up funding for The Inn’s construction. Since then CCF has provided over $1.8 million to The Inn, providing critical support towards capital projects and programs.
The Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc. is an independent nonprofit foundation not affiliated with any national charity. Since 1983 they have awarded grants of over $36.6 million to area hospitals and researchers to treat and cure childhood cancers.
