The Children’s Inn and CEO Jennie Lucca were honored on Wednesday, January 13 as a KPMG U.S. Community Champion at the Washington Capitals game against the Montreal Canadiens. Lucca and members of The Inn Board of Directors and staff took in the Caps’ overtime victory from the KPMG suite and were recognized on the center ice scoreboard during the first period of play. The jumbotron video introduced the over 18,000 fans in attendance to Jennie and highlighted The Inn’s work as a nonprofit that transforms care beyond medicine.

“We are deeply honored to be recognized as a KPMG Community Champion and sincerely grateful to KPMG and the Washington Capitals for their extraordinary hospitality,” said Lucca. “I am proud to accept this recognition on behalf of the entire Children’s Inn community—our staff, volunteers, donors, and partners—who together create a Place Like Home for families pursuing life-saving cures at the NIH.”

Lucca and The Children’s Inn team were joined by Carlos and his family, who arrived at NIH earlier in the day to pursue treatment at the NIH Clinical Center. Carlos, 20, was attending his first ice hockey game alongside his parents, Carlos and Aracely, and his sister Andrea. Despite the long day of travel, the family was thrilled to take part in the event and honored to receive swag bags filled with Capitals gear from KPMG and Monumental Sports and Entertainment. The family was captivated by the game and jumped out of their seats, cheering when Connor McMichael scored the game-winner with 39 seconds remaining in overtime.

“What an exciting night,” Carlos said on his way out of the arena. “I am so thankful for this opportunity and all the warmth that everyone has shown to me and my family.”

In addition to enjoying the beautiful suite, outfitted by KPMG with floor-to-ceiling screens that wrapped around the interior space and extended onto the ceiling itself, Lucca and The Inn’s team had an opportunity to see The Inn spotlighted on display boards in the main concourse of Capital One Arena. The KPMG Community Champion displays featuring Lucca and The Inn will be visible in the KPMG Quadrant outside section 109 throughout the next month, and a plaque will be installed permanently on a display adjacent to the screens.

“Moments like tonight remind us of the power of community,” Lucca continued. “I know this experience will create lasting memories for Carlos and his family and for all of us who are privileged to support them.”
