Scott Vogel By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT Scott Vogel is a young philanthropist on a mission to give back and help others. It’s been crucial to him all his life and has become even more important since he bought the Front Porch Piano Bar and Restaurant, an Ogunquit landmark, two years ago. “I’ve always been philanthropically involved, and it’s very important to me to give back,” said Vogel recently. At age 27, Vogel is muscular, healthy and handsome. He looks like many other young men in the prime of their lives. But it hasn’t always been that way, he said. “When I was six-months old, I was diagnosed with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a rare immune deficiency that makes me very susceptible to infection. It started with an abscess on my neck,” he said. (CGD is an inherited immunodeficiency disease that increases the body’s susceptibility to certain bacteria and fungi.) That diagnosis in infancy

led to Vogel’s life-long involvement at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, where he has received numerous life-saving treatments, including two stem cell transplants over the past 27

In 2014, his CGD worsened, necessitating another stem cell transplant at the NIH, with Josh again his donor. It worked and he is considered “clinically cured.” These days, Vogel watches his diet, avoids anything with bacteria “like leftovers and buffets” and serves on the board of directors of the Children’s Inn of NIH, while raising money for it and other organizations. mold-based pneumonia caused by the aspergillus fungus. “I spent a month in two New York hospitals and another two months at the NIH,” said Vogel, who grew up in New York but summered in Ogunquit with his parents, Bob and Grace, and brother Josh. NIH doctors treated him with life-saving experimental antibiotics. His Dad moved in to the Children’s Inn of NIH, a facility that offers support and lodging to families and patients being treated there. Scott received his first stem cell transplant at the NIH when he was in fifth grade. Josh, four years older, was his donor. The procedure worked, and after a 100-day hospital stay, Scott was fine for the next

Great Falls Park Final Design Open House

BERWICK After a busy first half of summer at public design workshops, the Great Falls Park Committee is excited to share a final conceptual design with the public. Join committee members and the ecological designer, Cornelius Murphy, on Saturday, August 18 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. outside at the House of Hope, 25 Saw Mill Hill in Berwick (across from the park), for coffee, snacks, and a walk-through design presentation. Additionally, learn about implementation, phasing and continued volunteer opportunities that will help the park move forward.

Great Falls Park is a community project to restore and revive the waterfront south of the Great Falls Dam on the Salmon Falls River in Berwick, Maine. The idea for a park on the site traces back to 1992 and was revived during Berwick’s downtown visioning process. Voters approved purchasing the 2.7 acers of land in 2016. Over

the past 18 months, an Envision Berwick sub-committee devoted to Great Falls Park has organized work days, held public workshops, and worked with an ecological designer to develop conceptual designs for the park. Track the progress of the park and learn how to get involved with this community effort at www.greatfallspark.me.

raised $72,000 for Children’s Inn, topping last year’s $32,000. “We had five business owners dressed in drag doing a talent show. There was a silent auction and raffle. This community is amazingly generous,” he said, noting that 60 other Maine residents have been or are being treated at the NIH. “It’s a cause near and dear to me since I have spent so much time there,” he said.

But, he added, at the Front Porch, it’s all about giving back. In the past year, he, his staff and patrons have raised or donated over $150,000 to 10 organizations including the Marginal Way Preservation Trust, Veteran’s Count and Frannie Peabody Center for AIDS/HIV awareness and support. “It’s an amazing opportunity to be here and give back,” said Vogel.

first, I had to have swallow-wort identified for me amongst a sea of green vegetation. But after a short time, I could differentiate the good from the bad. It made for such a new experience afterwards walking the Marginal Way, a path I’ve known since I was a child.” Another participant said: “I brought my family to Pod Picking Day…There was some grumbling from the teens, but we all ended up feeling great about the time spent pulling black swallowwort. Highlights were the views (amazing), … and answering questions from curious walkers. It was fun and rewarding – and two thumbs up from the teenagers!” The native plants along the Marginal Way have to be tough to survive in the harsh environment of rocky soil, salt and wind. But they cannot compete with aggressive invasive plants like Oriental bittersweet that take over the landscape. Black Swallow-wort, a non-native vine growing along the Marginal Way, has become one of the most serious invasive plants throughout the northeast

United States. BSW, in the milkweed family, was brought to this country from Eastern Europe in the 1800’s. This plant, once established, quickly carpets the landscape, choking out desirable plants, and it is also harmful to the Monarch butterfly population. If the Monarch lays her eggs on a BSW leaf, instead of a native milkweed, all of the newly hatched larvae die after feeding on the toxic leaves. Swallow-wort is an extremely tenacious plant. Up to this point, efforts to control BSW have been manual ones – digging, cutting and pod picking. But beginning this August, a new approach is being tried on the Marginal Way - biocontrol. Biological control agents are the natural enemies from the home range of an invasive species. The agents are researched for many years to ensure that they do not pose a threat to our environment. The agent (usually an insect) is released to prey on the invasive species and bring it into balance with the local ecosystem. In this case, a small green caterpillar (Hypena opulenta) See PODS page 21...

~ News ~ Grand Opening Kickoff for New Seacoast Democratic Campaign Office YORK The Democratic municipal committees of Ogunquit, Kittery, Eliot, South Berwick, and York have established a campaign office in support of local and state Democratic candidates. The town committees, in coordination with the York County Democratic Committee and Maine Democratic Party, have set up the office in Meadowbrook Plaza, 647 US Route 1

in York. Democrats are invited to attend an office kick-off party on Tuesday, August 21, between 5 and 7 p.m. in the new space. York Dems chair, Paul Stolberg, said “the grand opening event is an opportunity for local Democrats to meet gubernatorial candidate, Janet Mills, and state senatorial candidate, Mark Lawrence, who may be less familiar to southern Mainers. In addition to the featured

speakers, Mills and Lawrence, local house district candidates will be present. Rep. Deane Rykerson (D1, Kittery), Michelle Meyer (D2, Eliot), Rep. Lydia Blume (D3, York), Rep. Patty Hymanson (D4, York), and Tiffany Roberts-Lovell, (D6, South Berwick), will give brief remarks. They also look

forward to talking with their present and prospective constituents. “We want our town committee members to become familiar with the office and with local plans for a coordinated effort on behalf of Democrats this fall, said Kathleen Marra, Kittery Dems chair. “What’s

better than with a party? Food, beverages and good company will be in abundance. Event Chair, Bobbi Treen of Ogunquit, leaked that a “surprise guest will be at the event, “who is sure to energize attendees as we kick off the fall campaign season in the Seacoast. WASHINGTON, DC By an overwhelming bipartisan majority of 87-10, the Senate passed legislation that will strengthen our national defense and support the men and women in uniform. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, voted in favor of the bill that now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law. The fiscal year (FY) 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) authorizes $708 billion for national defense so that our military has the resources it needs to confront threats around the globe. The funding will increase training, accelerate modernization efforts, bolster readiness, and support members of the armed forces. “This legislation provides essential resources to our military so that it can continue to meet ongoing and emerging threats to our nation and keep the American people secure. Moreover, it ensures that members of our armed forces have the training and equipment they need to carry out their missions as safely and effectively as possible, said Senator Collins. “I am pleased that this bill also supports our men and women in uniform through the largest pay increase in nearly a decade, and

it includes provisions that are important to the thousands of Mainers who work in the defense industry. The overwhelming support this legislation received is indicative of the bipartisan commitment to strengthening our national security. Senator Collins advocated for a number of provisions that are important to Maine, including: Long-Term TDY Reduced Per Diem Repeal. Repeals the Department of Defense’s (DoD) approach to its long-term temporary duty per diem policy. This policy affects shipyard workers who travel in support of the Navy’s ship maintenance missions. to drive, walk and bike in a safe fashion, Coalition Assistant Director Jim Tasse said. As the state’s leading group promoting bicycling and walking safety, the Coalition routinely monitors crash reports for incidents that involve bicyclists or pedestrians. According to Coalition records, this is the first fatality of a person on a bike in Maine in 2018. There were two bicycle fatalities in 2017. The Coalition does not have all the details on this incident, and cannot comment on it specifically. However,

in general these kinds of incidents should remind all users of Maine’s roads to watch for other users at all times, drive at a reasonable and safe speed for conditions, obey traffic laws, and never drive, walk, or bicycle dis-

By G.P. Diamond City life. A crazy life. Full of stress, traffic, and the same old routine. And trust me, I know. I may only be a 12 year old girl but I live with this whole circus act all the time. Even when I look out my window on my third floor apartment I can’t help but feel as though I could stop time. Stop it and relax for a minute or two. My mother was born here in Maine and my father was born in Boston, like me. Because of this, I visit Maine periodically with my mother. Sometimes it’s a good way to get away from it all. Sometimes it’s good to forget about it. Forget about work, school or anything else stressful in your life. And sometimes it’s good to escape. Come to Maine. Feel the ocean breeze against your face. Go apple picking at local farms. Or even just sit outside and enjoy the wonders of nature. And that’s what Maine is truly about. When you come to visit Maine what are your motives? Relaxation? A different change of pace? Mine usually include all of these things. Many of the local attractions include the gorgeous beaches, nature, open space,

quaint villages and shops, and the sense of a community. Being able to put your feet up at the end of the day. Being able to disconnect from the crazy life your may lead back in the city. In all of our lifetimes we will always come across stress like an old friend. It follows many of us. This hassle could be work, family, friends, or even us. When we have a chance to just relax and enjoy our time as people on this Earth, we are truly getting away from the heavy burdens that may shadow us in a way. We all need a place to feel at ease and to maybe and feel a little at home. I myself have been coming to visit Maine for as long as I remember. I think of it almost as my second home. The place where I can chill and mellow out. A place, in a way, that is my own oasis. Maine is such beautiful state full of nature, love, and is a place to recharge and come back to life. Vacation may not be living style but it’s truly an escape because even if a piece of your heart is left here in Maine, at the end you’re always happy to back home where your whole heart is.

Productive Ways To Spend The Summer After Graduation come any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job.

Graduation is a momentous day in the lives of college students. After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are finally ready to begin their professional lives. That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up. The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates. It can be easy to grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer. But spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates over-

Plan NOW if you’re heading South this winter:

Contact career services offices at your alma mater. Career services offices can help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college. Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets. Seek internships If part- or full-time employment is proving elusive, don’t be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can

RUST AUTO SHIPPERS

S Your Car! Ship

provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries. Summer internships may already be filled, so scour job boards for fall or winter internships. Start networking. Students who interned can get in touch with their past supervisors or mentors and find out if the company is hiring. Such people may be more inclined to bring someone with direct experience onboard — even if that experience was brief and unpaid. In addition, grads can connect with adjunct professors who work in their desired fields. When job hunting, don’t get pigeon-holed by your major. Just because a student graduates with a particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that field. In fact, many companies

may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not specific to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained. Attend job fairs. While other graduates may be taking the summer off, enterprising grads looking for work should attend as many job fairs as possible. Graduates likely won’t leave job fairs with employment offers in hand, but job fairs are a great way for grads to meet hiring managers and submit their rÊsumÊs to potential employers. Customize a rÊsumÊ for every job. Be sure the curriculum vitae is not static. Write and refine rÊsumÊs for each job you apply for, mildly tweaking the wording or accomplishments to address the key phrases used in the job listing.

Significant Wins for Maine’s Potato Industry Included in Senate-Funding Bill WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, secured significant victories for Maine’s potato farmers in the fiscal year 2019 Appropriations Minibus that passed the Senate by an overwhelming majority of 83-15. Following Senator Collins’ strong advocacy, the legislation included $2.75 million – an increase of $250,000 – for potato research and $20 million for the U.S. Department of Agricul-

ture’s (USDA) Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which supports the work of the University of Maine’s Cooperative Extension Potato IPM program. The bill also includes language authored by Senator Collins to give schools the flexibility to provide potatoes through the School Breakfast Program. “Maine potatoes are a staple in homes across the country and are a testament to the thousands of hardworking farmers in Northern Maine, said

Family Fun at Acton Fair ACTON One of Maine’s oldest agricultural fairs, the Acton Fair, is taking place August 23-26. In addition to traditional agricultural attractions that include ox and horse pulling,

sheep dog demonstrations and tractor pulls, visitors of all ages will find and are sure to enjoy the Cruise’n Car Show, live entertainment, the Ms. Acton Pageant and the many vendors selling food and crafts.

Senator Collins. “The provisions I worked to include in this bill will support Maine potato farmers by investing in innovative research at UMaine to improve the potato’s resilience and ensuring this nutritious vegetable can be offered as part of school breakfasts. Senator Collins has been a longtime champion of Maine’s agricultural heritage. Last year, she introduced the bipartisan Cultivating Revitalization by Expanding American Agricultural The fairgrounds are located at 550 Route 109 in Acton with admission prices of $8 for adults and children under age 12 get in for free. On Friday, Senior Citizens pay only $4 until 4 p.m. For more information go to the Acton Fair website at www.actonfair.net.

Trade and Exports (CREAATE) Act, which would double the funding for two USDA export promotion programs and help U.S. farmers stay competitive in the global markets. Senator Collins also led the successful effort in 2011 to block a USDA proposed rule that would limit servings of a certain category of vegetables that includes white potatoes, green peas, lima beans, and corn, to a total of one-cup per week in the National School Lunch Program.

IPM is a multidisciplinary approach to making crop management decisions, which includes disease identification and weed control strategies. UMaine’s IPM provides upto-date potato insect and disease scouting and forecasting reports to potato growers and industry professionals in central and northern Maine during the potato growing season. The Appropriations Minibus will now be considered by the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Grumpy Old Men” at Ogunquit Playhouse: A Sweet, Simple Tribute to Friendship and Life

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT Grumpy Old Men, the Musical celebrates aging in a sassy, slightly sexy sort of way. Now in its world premiere at the Ogunquit Playhouse, the lively production elicits lots of laughs, even as it tugs at the heartstrings in its bittersweet, tender moments. The new musical by composer Neil Berg, with book by Dan Remmes and lyrics by the late Nick Meglin, is based on the 1993 film that starred real-life best buddies Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau as feuding

friends John and Max and Ann Margret as Ariel, the seductive new woman in town. It’s set in the frozen, fictitious town of Wabasha, Minnesota, a place where ice fishing and hanging out at Chuck’s bait shop help folks get through the long Midwest winters. The plot revolves around retirees John (Mark Jacoby) and Max (Ed Dixon), who are coming to grips with aging, loneliness, loss of vitality, their adult kids and the romantic spark that Ariel (Leslie Stevens) ignites in them both when she moves into

the neighborhood. John has unpaid tax issues, too, and is stalked by Snyder (Brenda Braxton), an IRS agent whose tight skirts and spike heels are out of place among the boots, scarves and earmuffs worn by the good folk of Wabasha. In the film, actor Buck Henry played Snyder. By replacing the male character with a female in the role, the musical’s creators gave themselves leeway to tie the plot up nicely for the play’s “happily ever after” ending. A new character named Punky Olander, Chuck’s cousin, also shows up in the musical. It’s another wise move, since it adds substance to the storyline, and, more importantly, gives Sally Struthers a chance to show off her comedic chops much to the delight of Playhouse audiences. Indeed, this may be Struthers’ funniest role in the past couple seasons and she brings her characteristic zing to every one-liner she lands and song she sings. Kudos to her and love that yodel. Cheers, too, to Hal Linden, a wonder (he’s 87) as libidinous Grandpa Gustafson, a lusty old guy of 94 who has the play’s raunchiest lines and reminds us all the “life is all about living, but it’s ticking so damn fast away.” The rest of the cast, under Matt Lenz’s fast-paced direction, is up to the challenge of giving this new show its legs, most notably Jacoby and Dixon, the two “grumpies,” Stevens, the lean, lovely Ariel, and Doug Eskew,

She hopes to have at least ten different participants and will work with each on final performances. “I have no pre-conceived notion of what this evening might become,” she explains, “but in my experience I am always stunned by the incredible talents many people simply dismiss. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have several videos I have from my cellphone etc. and I would like to change the videos to avi so when I burn to dvd’s I can play it in all devices. Please advice. Thank you, Kay Dear Kay, What you need in order to burn DVDs that play in all devices is a software program made to author movie DVDs. A movie DVD that plays in all devices is not made by just burning a file onto the disk, you need to create, or author the DVD specifically for playing movies. I have used Roxio Creator to author DVDs in the past, and it has worked great. There are probably other programs available as well, but I don’t have experience authoring DVDs with them. Here are just a few: Cyberlink Power Director, Magix Movie Edit Pro and Nero Video Pro. I hope this helps, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, All of a sudden I cannot copy and paste. I can highlight but as soon as I take my finger off the highlight goes away. I write a lot and copy for others. Hope you can help? Arthur Dear Arthur, It sounds like either the mouse or keyboard is not working right. If one of the arrow keys on your keyboard was stuck, this would cause your highlighting to go away. Or, if the mouse button was stuck, it would also remove highlighting. If you are using a desktop computer, try replacing the mouse and/or keyboard to see if one of them is causing the problem. If you are using a laptop, you might have to disable the built in touchpad and/ or keyboard and plug in a usb replacement to see if that is causing the problem. Let me know if this helps solve your problem. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a fairly new computer and its running very slow. There is plenty of room on the hard drive so I just don’t un-

derstand. One of my daughters friends said that the memory may be full. What’s the difference between the memory and the hard drive? Also can I clean out the memory? Thanks so much for your help in advance, I have learned a lot from your newsletters.... keep it up! Pam Dear Pam, There are two different kinds of memory in your computer. One, is memory that is used for storage, usually that is your hard drive. When your hard drive gets too full, your computer will slow down, however, with the large hard drives in systems these days, that is not usually an issue. The other type of memory is working memory, usually referred to as RAM memory. RAM cannot hold onto information when the power is off, so it gets cleared out and re-loaded each time you restart your computer. That is why re-booting your computer often fixes problems. There are two ways you can speed up your computer if the RAM is too full. One is to purchase more RAM, and the other is to stop some of the programs that are loading when the computer boots. If you are running Windows 7, 8 or 10, you really want to have at least 8GB of RAM in your computer. If

you use your computer for photo and/or video editing, you want to have even more. I currently have 32GB of RAM in my computer, which keeps it running nice and fast. If you have plenty of RAM, but your computer is running slower and slower, you have too many programs loading when your computer starts. Take a look at the icons in your system tray, located in the lower right of your screen. Are there more than 5 or 6 icons there? They all represent programs that are loaded in memory and running the whole time you use your computer. There can also be other programs running that didn’t put an icon in the system tray. To see all the items that are loading when your computer starts, open the task manager. You can open it easily by pressing Ctrl, Alt and Del on your keyboard at the same time, or just tap the start button and type, task manager. Once in the task manager, click on the “Startup tab, and you will see a long list of items. Every item that is enabled is running. To stop items from running the next time you start your computer, just click once on the item, then click the “Disable button in the lower-right corner of the window. Your changes will take place when you restart

your computer. You can turn off any items you wish, but some you will want to keep running, especially, things like your antivirus. Elizabeth Hi Computer Lady I love your newsletter, I always file just in case Ive a problem. Can I set up my gmail account in MS Outlook, if so, how can I do this? Regards, Ali Dear Ali, You can get your Gmail in any email program that supports IMAP. I get mine in Thunderbird, and it works great. In order to do this, you need to go to your Gmail settings and find a couple of things. To get started, click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner of your Gmail window, then click on settings

in the menu. Across the top of the settings page, you will see a row of blue text with things like, Labels, Inbox, etc. Find the text that says, “Forwarding and POP/IMAP and click on that. In the section labeled, “IMAP Access: click to enable IMAP, then click the “Save Changes button. From there, you will see a link to “Configuration Instructions at the bottom. Follow the directions for your version of Outlook and you should be all set. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. York Hospital Receives Grant for Emergency Narcan® Supply YORK York Hospital is pleased to announce that the Kittery Block Party Committee has awarded a $1,000 grant to help the hospital provide emergency overdose prevention packs to community members who need access to life-saving Narcan® (naloxone nasal atomizer) for themselves or for loved ones struggling with opioid use disorder (OUD). Deaths involving drug overdoses have skyrocketed across Maine, creating a serious public health crisis. Prescription drug abuse is presently at the forefront, but far from the only cause. In response to this crisis, York Hospital has opened a first of its kind treatment facility that is leading the way to recovery for residents battling substance use disorder. The new York Hospital Recovery Center offers a med-

ication-assisted treatment program that aims to provide a way out of addiction. The program is open to anyone in the York Hospital service area, with or without insurance, and has been created to help local residents in the fight against this deadly epidemic. In 2017, York Hospital cared for 52 overdoses in the Emergency Department. Often, the only thing separating whether an overdose victim goes to the hospital instead of the morgue is a dose of Narcan•, an opioid antagonist medication that can reverse the effects of opioid overdoses. Narcan offers a chance for survival and recovery by quickly binding to opioid receptors in the brain of the person suffering from an overdose, triggering the brain to breathe again. With hardly any side effects, Narcan is essentially a miracle medica-

tion with a clear potential to prevent death. There are two variations, an injectable form and a nasally administered form, and both are escalating in price due to demand. Barriers of cost and insurance are common, and without financial assistance, it’s becoming more difficult for people to access this overdose antidote. Families who have members at home struggling with opiate misuse need a Rescue

Medication Kit essentially an overdose prevention kit containing a Narcan nasal administration device that provides one-time use. Having a Rescue Medication Kit on hand in the home can mean the difference between life and death. York Hospital has a number of these life-saving kits in the Emergency Department, and this grant will help the hospital stock more kits, as this epidemic grows locally. Accessibility is a priority

of the York Hospital Recovery Center. One central phone number, 207-351-2118, will respond to all Recovery Center inquiries. Whether from a loved one seeking guidance about how to help a family member with a substance use disorder, or somebody in urgent need of assistance for a personal situation, trained staff will provide timely access to care and direct each caller to appropriate resources. The York Hospital Recovery Center can be reached at 207-351-2118.

Study Finds Low Drug Purity in Maine It’s national news that the drug crisis has spread all across the U.S., but many people don’t know how it’s affecting Maine. The team at Laguna Treatment Centers used DEA data to track geographical differences in drug purity across the country. Some findings include: In Maine, drugs were on average 33.2 percent pure, which was the fourth lowest of the states that were analyzed; Despite having the one of lowest purity levels, Maine has one of the highest overdose rates and tied with Massachusetts and D.C. and that drugs seized west of the Mississippi River were nearly 40 percent purer than those confiscated in Eastern states For casual and dependent users alike, the details of chemistry remain dangerously unclear; users never truly know what they’ve purchased. But for law enforcement

officials dedicated to drug interdiction, testing the substances they’ve seized yields valuable clues about the dynamics of drug trafficking in America. The Drug Enforcement Administration keeps detailed records of the purity of drugs they’ve confiscated and discloses this

information to the public each year. DEA drug purity testing reveals a nation divided: On average, drugs seized west of the Mississippi River were nearly 40 percent purer than See PURITY page 19...

Health & Fitness ...PURITY from page 18 those confiscated in Eastern states. Although these findings might be interpreted in many ways, it’s possible drug purity throughout much of the Western U.S. stems from the proximity to Mexico. More than 90 percent of heroin sold domestically comes across the southern border, and Mexican cartels have moved into mass production of methamphetamine as well. Perhaps as drugs drift further east, away from their point of origin, they are more likely to be diluted by middlemen before reaching retail consumers. Interestingly, however, many states where drug purity was highest boasted few urban centers typically associated with drug trafficking and accessibility. In Hawaii, Nebraska, and South Dakota, drugs were more than 90 percent pure on average. It’s worth noting methamphetamine is a particularly severe problem in these states, and that drug’s purity has risen steadily nationwide in recent years. Conversely, interdiction efforts in New Hampshire likely reflect the urgent local threats of heroin and fentanyl, drugs that tend to be heavily diluted with additive substances. That dilution does not equate to greater safety – it may even lead to greater loss of life. When considering which states possess the highest levels of purity for each substance, some surprising conclusions were made. Utah, for example, leads all other states in average cocaine purity – but authorities say many seizures in the state occur on major highways as traffickers attempt to trans-

port drugs to their real destinations further east. Similarly, California was among the top states for the purity of several substances, including methamphetamine and opioids. That could be because California remains a point of entry for narcotics from Mexico, and drugs seized so close to the source have a potential likelihood to be purer. The states with the highest rates of heroin purity, however, were concentrated in the Midwest and East Coast regions. As the DEA report notes, these markets typically consume white powder heroin, and increased poppy cultivation in Mexico will ensure the drug remains intensely potent in these areas in the years to come. Meanwhile, Arizona had the highest rate of methamphetamine purity – the state’s border with Mexico has been the site of a recent surge in trafficking activity and law en-

$840,000 in Funding Announced for Seniors Managing Chronic Diseases WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) announced that the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration on Community Living (ACL) has awarded $840,000 to Healthy Living for ME, a partnership between three Area Agencies on Aging – Spectrum Generations, SeniorsPlus, and Aroostook Agency on Aging – to support chronic disease self-management education programs. “Healthy Living for ME provides Maine seniors with a variety of evidence-based health and wellness classes that emphasize self-care, independence, and preventative measures for those

who have chronic conditions and pain,” said Senators Collins and King. “By ensuring that older adults have the resources and tools they need to manage their conditions, this funding will lower health care costs and help Mainers live longer, healthier lives.” In April, Senators Collins and King sent a letter to the ACL in support of Healthy Living for ME’s grant application.

Healthy Living for ME currently provides a single point of entry to a statewide network of workshops that empower adults to address and better manage their health. The workshops the organization offers focus on improving balance and preventing falls and helping adults manage chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure, chronic pain, heart disease, COPD, arthritis, and diabetes.

People and Business Profiles Discover Hope In Kennebunk

KENNEBUNK In the heart of Kennebunk, there is a hidden, and threatened, treasure nestled behind Kennebunk Free Library and the Unitarian Church, across from where Summer Street Intersects with Main Street. Hope Woods, 72 acres of undeveloped forest and open meadows containing a network of trails and an abundance of wildlife, provides a natural oasis of open space adjacent to Kennebunk’s bustling downtown area. It is an exceptional recreational area with about 2 miles of meandering trails through a conglomerate of giant cedars, copper beech trees, a large hemlock grove, and many towering pines. The trails can be accessed at four points: Barnard Lane (through the cemetery), Wood Pond Lane (in the cul-de-sac), Fletcher Street (across from Me-

chanic Street), and Woodhaven Drive (near the intersection with Longwood). Signs are located at the trail entrances. Hope Woods

is the perfect place for a morning bird walk, a leisurely stroll, or an energetic jog. Hope Woods belongs to Hope Cemetery, one of the most visible reminders of Kennebunk’s rich history. Established in 1790, the Fredrick Law Olmstead inspired park-like cemetery is the final resting place for generations of our citizens, chronicling more than 200 years of the Kennebunk area and its people. A new organization, The Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods, is partnering with the Kennebunk Land Trust to conserve the 72 acres of woods and trails through a conservation easement. The easement will allow the woods to be protected for future generations. If you’re interested in exploring the trails or learning more about Hope Woods, visit www.hopecemeterykennebunk. com.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Seven Steps to Leave a Job Gracefully

Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40. People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road. The following are seven strategies people can employ as they leave their jobs to ensure those exits go as smoothly as possible. 1. Watch out for social media. It’s best to keep resignation plans to yourself and off of social media. You never know who is reading your posts, and bad-mouthing a soon-to-be-former employer

...PODS from page 4 is being introduced that feeds exclusively on Swallow-wort. Without the host plant BSW, it dies. This is a very slow and gradual process that may take a decade or more to know if it’s successful. The long green seedpods ripen through August, and open in September. The seed parachutes float off on the wind spreading BSW into new areas. Collecting seedpods helps to slow the spread of BSW. The trash bags (donated by Eldredge Lumber) full of pods are sent to the Ogunquit Transfer Station to be incinerated (along with household trash). All homeowners should do the same if this vine is present on property. BSW pods and rooted material should never go into compost piles. Experience is not necessary. Small groups led by experienced pod pickers show you what to do. Bring a hat, work gloves, and hand clippers if able. Long sleeves and long pants protect arms and legs in rough areas. Beverages, snacks will be available and a hot dog cook-out will take place from 11 a.m. to noon. Volunteers at the Lighthouse will direct where to park. For details, email ogtnativeplants@gmail.com.

can lead to hurt feelings and poor references. Resist the urge to rant about what’s making you unhappy at work or brag about a new position to your social network. 2. Play by the rules. Your employer may have a plan in place for how the company prefers resignations to be handled. The standard two- to three-week’s notice is a guideline. Visit with human resources if you need more information, such as whether or not a resignation letter or other documentation is required. 3. Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-to-face communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well.

Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter. 4. Announce your departure. Work collectively with your manager and other higher-ups to decide how to best handle the announcement to other employees. 5. Train your replacement and prepare final assignments. Volunteer to train or assist with getting your replacement set up. If you have any outstanding projects or documents, be sure to tie up any loose ends before leaving. Leave behind instructions or a guidebook if you think it will help your replacement perform their duties more effectively. 6. Keep the momentum. It can be tempting to phone it in as you near departure day, but this is inadvisable. Do your job to the best of your ability up until you say your goodbyes. 7. Pack on your own time. Cause as little disruption as possible by packing belongings before or after office hours. Respect the working environment, recognizing that your coworkers still need to get

their jobs done. Quitting a job can be full of mixed emotions. Just be sure to time it correctly and leave in as positive a way as possible to maintain a strong professional network. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

But look up in the nearest cat tree and he’ll be there, watching all the other cats vie for attention. Julius loves attention, too but he’s just not obnoxious about it. He’s very handsome and desirable, and he knows it. Dark orange with stripes in all the right places, this friendly young dude is just so self-assured maybe he feels he just doesn’t have to work hard at getting adopted. So this week Julius is our Kitty of the Week. This fellow came from midcoast Maine. He’s young, healthy and deserves a great home and life. Call 207-646-1611 or come in to visit him Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m. 4 p.m. at 1420 Post Road, Wells. Our Adoption Center has many kittens and cats of all ages waiting for homes. Although they are enjoying the best of what life can give them, they

Nomination Deadline for 2018 Silver Collar Awards

AUGUSTA In recognition of the increasing role that older workers play in today’s workforce, the Maine State Workforce Board’s Older Worker Committee has designated the Silver Collar Employers Award to honor Maine employers whose policies and practices match the needs of mature employees; valuing their skills and experience, strong work ethic, flexibility, and enthusiasm. Nomination deadline for this year’s awards is this Friday, August 17. For more information and to download the

application, visit www.maine.gov. A panel of private sector, non-profit, and government employment experts will consider a business’s flexible work options, training and development opportunities, Compensation and Benefits, and age-neutral policies and practices. Silver Collar Award winners are honored during National Employ Older Workers Week in September. Recipients of the State Workforce Board’s Silver Collar Award will be recognized to future employees, the public and the busi-

ness community. Successful applicants will be showcased in press releases to local newspapers and industry journals. Questions can be directed to the State Workforce Board at swb. dol@maine.gov or call 207-6215091, TTY Maine Relay 711. The State Workforce Board (SWB) is responsible for assisting Governor LePage in improving the state’s business climate by designing and implementing strategies that help Mainers enter the workforce as well as advance by increasing their skills.

Only juried members may participate in the exhibits. Guild member, Carol Santora, has donated her painting, “Conga Line, which will be raffled off at the end of the show on Sunday, 4 p.m., to benefit the AGK Scholarship Fund. Santora said, “After my observations of chickens at

local farms, I wanted to portray the ‘lighter’ side, strutting around, enjoying life, and exhibiting their ‘cheerfulness.’ They live social lives, display a range of personalities, and I express all of that with exaggerated colorful plumage. ‘Conga Line’ resulted as one of a series of chicken and rooster paintings. The scholarship is awarded to a promising Kennebunk High School art student. childhood and she graduated from Windham High School in 1945. She then graduated from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. In 1949, Lois married her high school sweetheart, Robert (Bob) Pirozok and they were happily married for 60 years until his death in 2009. Lois spent most of her married life as a homemaker, wife, and mom to her daughter, Katie,

making fabulous breads, pies, and cookies. She did return to nursing for 10 years beginning when Katie was in high school and was Director of Nursing at a skilled nursing facility. After spending summers in Maine since the 1950’s in 1983 Lois and Bob built their beloved retirement home on Drakes Island and spent their winters in Ellenton, FL. Lois loved to spoil her

grandchildren, Anna, Molly, Kolya, and Andrey with her baking and asked for a holiday wish list months in advance, to purchase “just the right gifts. Lois had many hobbies including refinishing and caning furniture and knitting beautiful Irish fisherman knit sweaters. She was an avid Red Sox and UConn basketball fan, and if the game was too close, she would have to leave the room, but

would ask from another room “What’s the score? Lois is survived by her daughter Katie (Kathleen) Brantner; grandchildren, Andrey and Kolya Brantner all of Wells and Anna and Molly Brantner of Athens, GA. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Wells on August 18 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice.

SPORTS Safety an Important Component of Hiking Hiking is a popular and accessible outdoor activity. According to the American Hiking Society, since the National Trail System was established under President Lyndon Johnson in 1965, the mileage of trails on federal lands has increased almost three-fold, from 88,000 to more than 193,000 in 2015. During that same time period, mileage of trails on state lands has increased from 15,000 to 42,500. And all those trails aren’t going to waste, as the Outdoor Industry Association notes that more than 34 million people went hiking in 2013. Hiking is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors, but veteran and novice hikers must emphasize safety when traversing the trails. Bring adequate supplies. Even hikers going on relatively brief hikes should pack supplies so they’re safe. Pack supplies such as a compass, a map of the trails you’ll be traversing, some basic first aid materials (bandaids, gauze, an antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin®, etc.), extra water, and extra food. Such supplies may be precautionary, but they’re potentially invaluable

if hikers get lost or suffer an injury during their hikes. Hike only in daylight hours. Hiking during the day allows hikers to take in nature at its sun-soaked best while reducing their risk of getting lost. In addition, park rangers and employees may not be working or accessible overnight. And depending on where hikers are hiking, trails may be home to nocturnal animals that may be startled by and aggressive toward men, women and children walking through their domains. When hiking, be sure to turn back at a time of day that ensures you can return to your vehicle in daylight. Let loved ones know your plans. All hikers, but especially those hiking alone, should let loved ones know they’re going hiking and exactly where they plan to hike. This can make it easier for park rangers or rescue teams to find you if you get lost. In addition to letting others know your plans, leave a note in the glove compartment of your vehicle explaining where you plan to hike.

Know the forecast. Weather can change at the drop of a hat, so before heading out, hikers should check the local forecast and make any necessary adjustments to stay safe. Be sure to include a rain jacket, sunscreen, ballcap, and warm clothing among your supplies to account for unexpected inclement weather. Shorten hiking excursions if storms are in the forecast. Stay within your abilities. Some people may consider hiking a leisure activity, but many trails can be physically challenging. Hikers should stay within their capabilities and steer clear of trails they do not feel like they can traverse safely. Stop by the park’s

YORK Monday night’s competition of the York Women’s Golf League found the six teams playing in heavy, wet fog but that did not dampen their spirits! With only one week to go in the 2018 season, the team standings are as follows: In first place is Paula Dargan’s Team 5 with 944 points followed by Team 4, led by Sandy Petrovich, in second place with 921 points. Team 1,

with Peggy Todd as captain, is currently in third place with 899 points. In fourth place with 885 points is Liz Nolan’s Team 2. Debbie Erikson’s Team 6 is in fifth place with 878 points and Team 3, led by Linda Jellison, is in sixth place with 833 points. The last day of competition will be Monday, August 27. Come cheer on YWGL players as they wind up a fun and spirited season of team play.
