Scott Vogel By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT Scott Vogel is a young philanthropist on a mission to give back and help others. It’s been crucial to him all his life and has become even more important since he bought the Front Porch Piano Bar and Restaurant, an Ogunquit landmark, two years ago. “I’ve always been philanthropically involved, and it’s very important to me to give back,” said Vogel recently. At age 27, Vogel is muscular, healthy and handsome. He looks like many other young men in the prime of their lives. But it hasn’t always been that way, he said. “When I was six-months old, I was diagnosed with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a rare immune deficiency that makes me very susceptible to infection. It started with an abscess on my neck,” he said. (CGD is an inherited immunodeficiency disease that increases the body’s susceptibility to certain bacteria and fungi.) That diagnosis in infancy

Giving Back to Others is a Way of Life

led to Vogel’s life-long involvement at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, where he has received numerous life-saving treatments, including two stem cell transplants over the past 27

years. “Our pediatrician connected us to the NIH and I was placed on interferon gamma injections — a preemptive medication to build up the immune system,” he explained. He was healthy until third grade, when he developed a

decade. In the meantime, he fell in love with Maine, worked at Amore and the Front Porch and attended University of Maine Portland, graduating in 2012 with a business and sports management degree. In 2014, his CGD worsened, necessitating another stem cell transplant at the NIH, with Josh again his donor. It worked and he is considered “clinically cured.” These days, Vogel watches his diet, avoids anything with bacteria “like leftovers and buffets” and serves on the board of directors of the Children’s Inn of NIH, while raising money for it and other organizations. Annual Chili-Fest Spices Up Next Weekend WELLS The Wells Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their 18th Annual Chili-Fest on Saturday, August 25, at the Wells Junior High Campus on Route 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The “Maine State CookOff”, sanctioned by the International Chili Society, is among the last events available for “chiliheads” to qualify to compete in the World Championship which will be held this year September 28-30 in St. Louis, MO. Entrants for this cook-off have come from as far away as Florida, Nevada and Illinois. The winner of this event will represent the State of Maine. The Cook-off will feature cooks in three categories Red Chili (traditional) made with beef and red ripened chili peppers; Green Chili (verde) made with either chicken or pork and green chili peppers and Salsa. Cash prizes and plaques are given to the winners along with bragging rights. The chili cooks will be bringing their chili to be served from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the

“People’s Choice” competition with a $250 first prize. Ballots for “People’s Choice” are included in the “tasting kits” available for sale. Great Falls Park Final Design Open House

BERWICK After a busy first half of summer at public design workshops, the Great Falls Park Committee is excited to share a final conceptual design with the public. Join committee members and the ecological designer, Cornelius Murphy, on Saturday, August 18 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. outside at the House of Hope, 25 Saw Mill Hill in Berwick (across from the park), for coffee, snacks, and a walk-through design presentation. Additionally, learn about implementation, phasing and continued volunteer opportunities that will help the park move forward.

Great Falls Park is a community project to restore and revive the waterfront south of the Great Falls Dam on the Salmon Falls River in Berwick, Maine. The idea for a park on the site traces back to 1992 and was revived during Berwick’s downtown visioning process. Voters approved purchasing the 2.7 acers of land in 2016. Over

the past 18 months, an Envision Berwick sub-committee devoted to Great Falls Park has organized work days, held public workshops, and worked with an ecological designer to develop conceptual designs for the park. raised $72,000 for Children’s Inn, topping last year’s $32,000. “We had five business owners dressed in drag doing a talent show. There was a silent auction and raffle. This community is amazingly generous,” he said, noting that 60 other Maine residents have been or are being treated at the NIH. “It’s a cause near and dear to me since I have spent so much time there,” he said.

But, he added, at the Front Porch, it’s all about giving back. In the past year, he, his staff and patrons have raised or donated over $150,000 to 10 organizations including the Marginal Way Preservation Trust, Veteran’s Count and Frannie Peabody Center for AIDS/HIV awareness and support. “It’s an amazing opportunity to be here and give back,” said Vogel.

first, I had to have swallow-wort identified for me amongst a sea of green vegetation. But after a short time, I could differentiate the good from the bad. It made for such a new experience afterwards walking the Marginal Way, a path I’ve known since I was a child.” Another participant said: “I brought my family to Pod Picking Day…There was some grumbling from the teens, but we all ended up feeling great about the time spent pulling black swallowwort. Highlights were the views (amazing), … and answering questions from curious walkers. It was fun and rewarding – and two thumbs up from the teenagers!” The native plants along the Marginal Way have to be tough to survive in the harsh environment of rocky soil, salt and wind. But they cannot compete with aggressive invasive plants like Oriental bittersweet that take over the landscape. Black Swallow-wort, a non-native vine growing along the Marginal Way, has become one of the most serious invasive plants throughout the northeast

United States. BSW, in the milkweed family, was brought to this country from Eastern Europe in the 1800’s. This plant, once established, quickly carpets the landscape, choking out desirable plants, and it is also harmful to the Monarch butterfly population. If the Monarch lays her eggs on a BSW leaf, instead of a native milkweed, all of the newly hatched larvae die after feeding on the toxic leaves. Swallow-wort is an extremely tenacious plant. Up to this point, efforts to control BSW have been manual ones – digging, cutting and pod picking. But beginning this August, a new approach is being tried on the Marginal Way - biocontrol. Biological control agents are the natural enemies from the home range of an invasive species. The agents are researched for many years to ensure that they do not pose a threat to our environment. The agent (usually an insect) is released to prey on the invasive species and bring it into balance with the local ecosystem. ~ News ~ Grand Opening Kickoff for New Seacoast Democratic Campaign Office YORK The Democratic municipal committees of Ogunquit, Kittery, Eliot, South Berwick, and York have established a campaign office in support of local and state Democratic candidates. The town committees, in coordination with the York County Democratic Committee and Maine Democratic Party, have set up the office in Meadowbrook Plaza, 647 US Route 1

in York. Democrats are invited to attend an office kick-off party on Tuesday, August 21, between 5 and 7 p.m. in the new space. York Dems chair, Paul Stolberg, said “the grand opening event is an opportunity for local Democrats to meet gubernatorial candidate, Janet Mills, and state senatorial candidate, Mark Lawrence, who may be less familiar to southern Mainers.� In addition to the featured

WASHINGTON, DC By an overwhelming bipartisan majority of 87-10, the Senate passed legislation that will strengthen our national defense and support the men and women in uniform. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, voted in favor of the bill that now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law. The fiscal year (FY) 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) authorizes $708 billion for national defense so that our military has the resources it needs to confront threats around the globe. The funding will increase training, accelerate modernization efforts, bolster readiness, and support members of the armed forces. “This legislation provides essential resources to our military so that it can continue to meet ongoing and emerging threats to our nation and keep the American people secure. Moreover, it ensures that members of our armed forces have the training and equipment they need to carry out their missions as safely and effectively as possible,� said Senator Collins. “I am pleased that this bill also supports our men and women in uniform through the largest pay increase in nearly a decade, and

it includes provisions that are important to the thousands of Mainers who work in the defense industry. By G.P. Diamond City life. A crazy life. Full of stress, traffic, and the same old routine. And trust me, I know. I may only be a 12 year old girl but I live with this whole circus act all the time. Even when I look out my window on my third floor apartment I can’t help but feel as though I could stop time. Stop it and relax for a minute or two. My mother was born here in Maine and my father was born in Boston, like me. Because of this, I visit Maine periodically with my mother. Sometimes it’s a good way to get away from it all. Sometimes it’s good to forget about it. Forget about work, school or anything else stressful in your life. And sometimes it’s good to escape. Come to Maine. Feel the ocean breeze against your face. Go apple picking at local farms. Or even just sit outside and enjoy the wonders of nature. And that’s what Maine is truly about. When you come to visit Maine what are your motives? Relaxation? A different change of pace? Mine usually include all of these things. Many of the local attractions include the gorgeous beaches, nature, open space,

quaint villages and shops, and the sense of a community. Being able to put your feet up at the end of the day. Being able to disconnect from the crazy life your may lead back in the city. In all of our lifetimes we will always come across stress like an old friend. It follows many of us. This hassle could be work, family, friends, or even us. When we have a chance to just relax and enjoy our time as people on this Earth, we are truly getting away from the heavy burdens that may shadow us in a way. We all need a place to feel at ease and to maybe and feel a little at home. I myself have been coming to visit Maine for as long as I remember. I think of it almost as my second home. The place where I can chill and mellow out. A place, in a way, that is my own oasis. Maine is such beautiful state full of nature, love, and is a place to recharge and come back to life. Vacation may not be living style but it’s truly an escape because even if a piece of your heart is left here in Maine, at the end you’re always happy to back home where your whole heart is.

Significant Wins for Maine’s Potato Industry Included in Senate-Funding Bill WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, secured significant victories for Maine’s potato farmers in the fiscal year 2019 Appropriations Minibus that passed the Senate by an overwhelming majority of 83-15. Following Senator Collins’ strong advocacy, the legislation included $2.75 million – an increase of $250,000 – for potato research and $20 million for the U.S. Department of Agricul-

ture’s (USDA) Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which supports the work of the University of Maine’s Cooperative Extension Potato IPM program. The bill also includes language authored by Senator Collins to give schools the flexibility to provide potatoes through the School Breakfast Program. “Maine potatoes are a staple in homes across the country and are a testament to the thousands of hardworking farmers in Northern Maine,� said

“Grumpy Old Men” at Ogunquit Playhouse: A Sweet, Simple Tribute to Friendship and Life

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT Grumpy Old Men, the Musical celebrates aging in a sassy, slightly sexy sort of way. Now in its world premiere at the Ogunquit Playhouse, the lively production elicits lots of laughs, even as it tugs at the heartstrings in its bittersweet, tender moments. The new musical by composer Neil Berg, with book by Dan Remmes and lyrics by the late Nick Meglin, is based on the 1993 film that starred real-life best buddies Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau as feuding

friends John and Max and Ann Margret as Ariel, the seductive new woman in town. It’s set in the frozen, fictitious town of Wabasha, Minnesota, a place where ice fishing and hanging out at Chuck’s bait shop help folks get through the long Midwest winters. John has unpaid tax issues, too, and is stalked by Snyder (Brenda Braxton), an IRS agent whose tight skirts and spike heels are out of place among the boots, scarves and earmuffs worn by the good folk of Wabasha. In the film, actor Buck Henry played Snyder. By replacing the male character with a female in the role, the musical’s creators gave themselves leeway to tie the plot up nicely for the play’s “happily ever after” ending. A new character named Punky Olander, Chuck’s cousin, also shows up in the musical. It’s another wise move, since it adds substance to the storyline, and, more importantly, gives Sally Struthers a chance to show off her comedic chops much to the delight of Playhouse audiences. Indeed, this may be Struthers’ funniest role in the past couple seasons and she brings her characteristic zing to every one-liner she lands and song she sings. Kudos to her and love that yodel. Cheers, too, to Hal Linden, a wonder (he’s 87) as libidinous Grandpa Gustafson, a lusty old guy of 94 who has the play’s raunchiest lines and reminds us all the “life is all about living, but it’s ticking so damn fast away.” The rest of the cast, under Matt Lenz’s fast-paced direction, is up to the challenge of giving this new show its legs, most notably Jacoby and Dixon, the two “grumpies,” Stevens, the lean, lovely Ariel, and Doug Eskew,

A movie DVD that plays in all devices is not made by just burning a file onto the disk, you need to create, or author the DVD specifically for playing movies. I have used Roxio Creator to author DVDs in the past, and it has worked great. There are probably other programs available as well, but I don’t have experience authoring DVDs with them. One, is memory that is used for storage, usually that is your hard drive. When your hard drive gets too full, your computer will slow down, however, with the large hard drives in systems these days, that is not usually an issue. The other type of memory is working memory, usually referred to as RAM memory. RAM cannot hold onto information when the power is off, so it gets cleared out and re-loaded each time you restart your computer. That is why re-booting your computer often fixes problems. There are two ways you can speed up your computer if the RAM is too full. One is to purchase more RAM, and the other is to stop some of the programs that are loading when the computer boots. If you are running Windows 7, 8 or 10, you really want to have at least 8GB of RAM in your computer. If

you use your computer for photo and/or video editing, you want to have even more. I currently have 32GB of RAM in my computer, which keeps it running nice and fast. If you have plenty of RAM, but your computer is running slower and slower, you have too many programs loading when your computer starts. Take a look at the icons in your system tray, located in the lower right of your screen. Are there more than 5 or 6 icons there? They all represent programs that are loaded in memory and running the whole time you use your computer. There can also be other programs running that didn’t put an icon in the system tray. To see all the items that are loading when your computer starts, open the task manager. You can open it easily by pressing Ctrl, Alt and Del on your keyboard at the same time, or just tap the start button and type, task manager. Once in the task manager, click on the “Startup� tab, and you will see a long list of items. Every item that is enabled is running. To stop items from running the next time you start your computer, just click once on the item, then click the “Disable� button in the lower-right corner of the window. Your changes will take place when you restart

your computer. You can turn off any items you wish, but some you will want to keep running, especially, things like your antivirus. York Hospital Receives Grant for Emergency Narcan® Supply YORK York Hospital is pleased to announce that the Kittery Block Party Committee has awarded a $1,000 grant to help the hospital provide emergency overdose prevention packs to community members who need access to life-saving Narcan® (naloxone nasal atomizer) for themselves or for loved ones struggling with opioid use disorder (OUD). Deaths involving drug overdoses have skyrocketed across Maine, creating a serious public health crisis. Prescription drug abuse is presently at the forefront, but far from the only cause. In response to this crisis, York Hospital has opened a first of its kind treatment facility that is leading the way to recovery for residents battling substance use disorder. The new York Hospital Recovery Center offers a med-

ication-assisted treatment program that aims to provide a way out of addiction. The program is open to anyone in the York Hospital service area, with or without insurance, and has been created to help local residents in the fight against this deadly epidemic. In 2017, York Hospital cared for 52 overdoses in the Emergency Department. Often, the only thing separating whether an overdose victim goes to the hospital instead of the morgue is a dose of Narcan•, an opioid antagonist medication that can reverse the effects of opioid overdoses. Narcan offers a chance for survival and recovery by quickly binding to opioid receptors in the brain of the person suffering from an overdose, triggering the brain to breathe again. With hardly any side effects, Narcan is essentially a miracle medica-

Study Finds Low Drug Purity in Maine It’s national news that the drug crisis has spread all across the U.S., but many people don’t know how it’s affecting Maine. The team at Laguna Treatment Centers used DEA data to track geographical differences in drug purity across the country. Although these findings might be interpreted in many ways, it’s possible drug purity throughout much of the Western U.S. stems from the proximity to Mexico. More than 90 percent of heroin sold domestically comes across the southern border, and Mexican cartels have moved into mass production of methamphetamine as well. Perhaps as drugs drift further east, away from their point of origin, they are more likely to be diluted by middlemen before reaching retail consumers. Interestingly, however, many states where drug purity was highest boasted few urban centers typically associated with drug trafficking and accessibility. In Hawaii, Nebraska, and South Dakota, drugs were more than 90 percent pure on average. It’s worth noting methamphetamine is a particularly severe problem in these states, and that drug’s purity has risen steadily nationwide in recent years. Conversely, interdiction efforts in New Hampshire likely reflect the urgent local threats of heroin and fentanyl, drugs that tend to be heavily diluted with additive substances. That dilution does not equate to greater safety – it may even lead to greater loss of life. When considering which states possess the highest levels of purity for each substance, some surprising conclusions were made. Utah, for example, leads all other states in average cocaine purity – but authorities say many seizures in the state occur on major highways as traffickers attempt to trans-

port drugs to their real destinations further east. Similarly, California was among the top states for the purity of several substances, including methamphetamine and opioids. That could be because California remains a point of entry for narcotics from Mexico, and drugs seized so close to the source have a potential likelihood to be purer. The states with the highest rates of heroin purity, however, were concentrated in the Midwest and East Coast regions. As the DEA report notes, these markets typically consume white powder heroin, and increased poppy cultivation in Mexico will ensure the drug remains intensely potent in these areas in the years to come. Meanwhile, Arizona had the highest rate of methamphetamine purity – the state’s border with Mexico has been the site of a recent surge in trafficking activity and law en-

Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40. People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road. The following are seven strategies people can employ as they leave their jobs to ensure those exits go as smoothly as possible. 1. Watch out for social media. It’s best to keep resignation plans to yourself and off of social media. You never know who is reading your posts, and bad-mouthing a soon-to-be-former employer

Leave behind instructions or a guidebook if you think it will help your replacement perform their duties more effectively. 6. Keep the momentum. It can be tempting to phone it in as you near departure day, but this is inadvisable. Do your job to the best of your ability up until you say your goodbyes. 7. Pack on your own time. Cause as little disruption as possible by packing belongings before or after office hours. Respect the working environment, recognizing that your coworkers still need to get

2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/3 cup of granular sugar

Topping Ingredients: 1/2 cup of granulated sugar Ÿ cup of packed brown sugar ž cup of all-purpose flower 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 6 tablespoons unsalted butter cut up ½ cup shelled pistachios, finely chopped, optional

Directions: 1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees 2. Mix all your filling ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Pour the mixture in a buttered 2-quart shallow baking dish and level. 3. In a large mixing bowl blend the flour, both granulated and brown sugar, and nutmeg together. Cut in your butter in small pieces until the mixture becomes crumbly. If you can eat nuts stir in the pistachios. Spoon mixture evenly over

the filling. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until it is bubbly, and your topping gets crispy. Serve warm with a large scoop of vanilla Ice Cream to help make the humidity more tolerable. You can make this ahead of time, keep refrigerated and serve cold or pop it in the microwave until warm, then add a scoop of ice cream. Enjoy! Recipe courtesy of Paul Parent.

Carmen Y. Blanchette, 82 NORTH BERWICK – Carmen Y. Blanchette of Portland Street, passed away peacefully August 10, 2018, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

She was born April 19, 1936 in Lewiston, daughter of Leo and Antoinette (Beaudry) Guilmet and graduated Lewiston High School in 1954. Carmen married the love of her life, Normand Blanchette in 1955 and would’ve celebrated 63 years of marriage on August 20. Carmen and Normand settled in North Berwick in 1960 where she worked at Value House, Service Merchandise and Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Personnel until her retirement in 1993. Many joked that Carmen came with the building. She was fondly dubbed Mother Pratt, and received the plaque to prove it! Carmen was the matriarch of her family with an incredibly generous heart. Throughout her sickness, she continued to help others and care for Normand. They loved to travel and were

2018, after a brief illness. He was born on March 30, 1930 the son of the late Emile E. Caron and Adele Gauvin Caron from Quebec. Ray served in the U.S. Army in Korea and then worked most of his life for Ingersoll Rand as an Engineer specialist in plastic blow molding. He travelled the globe teaching companies how to use these new machines. Ray had the distinct pleasure of making the very first plastic bottle for the Coca Cola company and also worked as a manufacturing engineer for Hasbro where he helped produce the classic G.I. Joe figures. Ray was also an avid outdoors man and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling and motorcycles. When retired Ray enjoyed gardening and was a gardener’s icon in the area. He and his partner, Frank, had over 1,000 varieties of Day Lillies which was called Blue Willow Gardens. Ray also enjoyed collecting and repairing clocks. Ray was predeceased by Frank Dunphy, his Life Partner of 40 years and is Survived by his two daughters Diane Gauthier

and Denise Tyrel of New Hampshire, four grandchildren and seven great-grand children. A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, August 23 from 2-4 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Interment will be in the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale. Nomination Deadline for 2018 Silver Collar Awards

AUGUSTA In recognition of the increasing role that older workers play in today’s workforce, the Maine State Workforce Board’s Older Worker Committee has designated the Silver Collar Employers Award to honor Maine employers whose policies and practices match the needs of mature employees; valuing their skills and experience, strong work ethic, flexibility, and enthusiasm. childhood and she graduated from Windham High School in 1945. She then graduated from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. In 1949, Lois married her high school sweetheart, Robert (Bob) Pirozok and they were happily married for 60 years until his death in 2009. Lois spent most of her married life as a homemaker, wife, and mom to her daughter, Katie,

making fabulous breads, pies, and cookies. She did return to nursing for 10 years beginning when Katie was in high school and was Director of Nursing at a skilled nursing facility. After spending summers in Maine since the 1950’s in 1983 Lois and Bob built their beloved retirement home on Drakes Island and spent their winters in Ellenton, FL. Lois loved to spoil her

grandchildren, Anna, Molly, Kolya, and Andrey with her baking and asked for a holiday wish list months in advance, to purchase “just the right gifts.� Lois had many hobbies including refinishing and caning furniture and knitting beautiful Irish fisherman knit sweaters. She was an avid Red Sox and UConn basketball fan, and if the game was too close, she would have to leave the room, but

would ask from another room “What’s the score?� Lois is survived by her daughter Katie (Kathleen) Brantner; grandchildren, Andrey and Kolya Brantner all of Wells and Anna and Molly Brantner of Athens, GA. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Wells on August 18 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice.

SPORTS Safety an Important Component of Hiking Hiking is a popular and accessible outdoor activity. According to the American Hiking Society, since the National Trail System was established under President Lyndon Johnson in 1965, the mileage of trails on federal lands has increased almost three-fold, from 88,000 to more than 193,000 in 2015. During that same time period, mileage of trails on state lands has increased from 15,000 to 42,500. And all those trails aren’t going to waste, as the Outdoor Industry Association notes that more than 34 million people went hiking in 2013. Hiking is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors, but veteran and novice hikers must emphasize safety when traversing the trails. Bring adequate supplies. Even hikers going on relatively brief hikes should pack supplies so they’re safe. Pack supplies such as a compass, a map of the trails you’ll be traversing, some basic first aid materials (bandaids, gauze, an antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin®, etc.), extra water, and extra food. Such supplies may be precautionary, but they’re potentially invaluable

if hikers get lost or suffer an injury during their hikes. Hike only in daylight hours. Hiking during the day allows hikers to take in nature at its sun-soaked best while reducing their risk of getting lost. In addition, park rangers and employees may not be working or accessible overnight. And depending on where hikers are hiking, trails may be home to nocturnal animals that may be startled by and aggressive toward men, women and children walking through their domains. When hiking, be sure to turn back at a time of day that ensures you can return to your vehicle in daylight. Let loved ones know your plans.
